Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs): JC Cut-Off Points (Singapore MOE Guidelines)

1. What are JC cut-off points?

JC cut-off points refer to the net aggregate score from O-Level results used for placement into Junior Colleges (JCs) via the Joint Admissions Exercise (JAE). They reflect the last score accepted for each JC and indicate the level of competition for that year.

To be eligible for admission to a junior college (JC) course via JAE or DSA-JC in 2026 or 2027, you must meet these 2 criteria:

  1. Your L1R5 gross aggregate score must not exceed 20.

  2. Meet the grade requirements for specific subjects.

2. How are JC cut-off points calculated now?

For admissions up to 2027 JAE, JC cut-off points are based on the L1R5 scoring system:

  • L1: English Language or Higher Mother Tongue

  • R5: Five relevant subjectsStudents must have an L1R5 gross aggregate score ≤20 to be eligible for JC admission. Bonus points (e.g. for CCA, affiliation or language programmes) can reduce the net score.

3. How will the cut-off point system change from 2028?

From the 2028 JAE, MOE will replace the L1R5 system with the L1R4 scoring system. Under L1R4:

  • Applicants count five O-Level subjects only (one language + four relevant subjects).

  • To be eligible for JC, students must achieve an L1R4 gross aggregate score ≤16.Bonus points will be capped at 3 points (with additional LEP bonus where applicable).

JC Admissions Update (Singapore): MOE will change O-Level score requirements from L1R5 to L1R4 starting 2028 — click here to learn more.

4. Will cut-off points across different JCs change with L1R4?

Yes. Because the scoring system changes, JC cut-off point numbers will shift when converted from L1R5 to L1R4 criteria. However, MOE expects the proportion of students eligible for JC admission to remain comparable, even though the raw scoring scale is lower (16 instead of 20)

5. Do bonus points still apply under L1R4?

Yes. Bonus points will continue to be subtracted from the raw L1R4 score to form the net aggregate score, which determines posting. However, the maximum bonus point cap is reduced from 4 (under L1R5) to 3 points under L1R4 to align with fewer subjects counted.

6. What happens if a student misses the JC cut-off?

Students who do not meet cut-off requirements can explore alternatives such as:

  • Appeals Exercise during JAE (depending on vacancies)

  • Millennia Institute (MI) entry (which will also adopt L1R4 thresholds)

  • Polytechnic Foundation Programme (PFP) post-O-LevelsThese pathways support continued academic progression beyond O-Levels.
