Building Strong Foundations for Confident Readers and Writers

Composition Writing
Every great story begins with an engaging introduction, unfolds through a meaningful challenge, culminates in a moment of insight, and concludes with a thoughtful reflection. At Hess Academy, we call this the 4M approach, a core framework our Primary students use to tackle the PSLE.
While compositions of that complexity aren’t expected from our K2 students, our program is carefully designed to scaffold their learning toward that end goal.
Beyond basic sentence-writing exercises, we introduce our younger students to the importance of a story arc and the art of crafting a problem that hooks readers, building toward an engaging climax.
Reading & Comprehension Skills
Reading and writing form the foundation of English mastery — and the key to excelling across all subjects. Even Science and Math demand clear comprehension and precise expression.
At Hess Academy, we challenge students early with open-ended comprehension, guiding them to analyse advanced texts and articulate their ideas with clarity and accuracy. This cultivates a strong linguistic foundation that supports success in every area of learning.

Spelling & Dictation
A strong language foundation begins with accurate spelling and the ability to craft clear, coherent paragraphs. Through weekly spelling and dictation exercises, students strengthen their grasp of essential English skills while expanding their vocabulary.
This consistent practice enhances both reading and writing proficiency, laying the groundwork for lasting academic success.

Progressive Writing Programme
Our composition writing programme is broken into manageable, bite-sized tasks that culminate in a full-length composition. Students are taught to systematically generate ideas, craft coherent paragraphs, and tie the story together, while retaining essential storytelling elements such as a clear climax and a meaningful reflection.
Early Exposure to Exam-Style Components
By introducing Grammar & Vocabulary MCQ, Cloze passages, comprehension questions, and synthesis tasks early, students develop familiarity and proficiency with examinable components well before they face formal exams. This gives younger learners a strong head start as they enter Primary school.

Thematic & Relatable Content
The programme contextualises Paper 2 components using relatable themes and visuals to help students grasp concepts more easily. Grammar is taught through colourful illustrations, while vocabulary is organised around familiar themes such as family and everyday objects at home. This sense of relatability makes the content more approachable and supports long-term retention.
